ELECTRICAL SERVICE UPGRADES
The phrases “electrical panel upgrade” and “electrical service upgrade are often used interchangeably. That’s because they are usually performed together. They are, however, two separate things.
An electrical service upgrade refers to upgrading the level of electrical service coming into your house “from the pole.” For instance, an older home may only be receiving 50, 60, or 100 amps. A service upgrade can bring this up to as high as 200 amps. But when you upgrade your service, you’ll often need to upgrade your panel as well. If your existing electrical panel can’t accommodate the level of service you’ll need then it will need to be upgraded as well.
You may need to replace, upgrade, or install a new electrical panel even if you aren’t upgrading your service. For instance, if your panel is old it may be worn out and inefficient. In some cases, it may need to be replaced for safety issues.
